Well it has been a good month since we last updated the new section, but we are back. We have finally agreed on a web style that we believe will offer an easy way to find your favorite reviews, new and release dates. Expect to see a boat load of new reviews in the coming weeks.
Weekly Releases March 7, 2008
This Tuesday brings several blockbusters to your home, check our review sections for more details. I for one am quite excited to own several of these titles which includes: No Country for Old Men, Bee Movie, Hitman, and Dan in Real Life. These titles (excluding Bee Movie) will be released both on DVD and Blu ray. Of course Bee Movie was scheduled for a HD DVD release, but has since been pulled. We look forward to its eventual release on Blu ray. For a complete list of this week releases check our release list.
No Country Takes Home Gold February 24, 2008 Michael Raymond
This year on Hollywood’s biggest night, the biggest award of the night not surprisingly goes to No Country For Old Men. It was also the winner of three other awards, including Best Director, Adapted Screenplay, and Supporting Actor. It was also a historic night for the Coen brothers who join the ranks of Peter Jackson and Francis Ford Coppola as winners of three Oscars in the same year.
In the acting department it was a European takeover, all four awards went to European actors. Daniel Day Lewis as expected took home gold for his brilliant portrayal of a relentless oil man. Javier Bardem also expectedly won for his portrayal of a psychopathic serial killer in No Country For Old Men. In the women’s acting category things did not go as expected. Marion Cotillard pulled off an upset in the best actress category, edging out expected winners Ellen Paige or Julie Christie. Also Tilda Swinton upset Cate Blanchett and Amy Ryan to win Best Supporting Actress for her role in Michael Clayton.
Jon Stewart hosted this year for his second time, and this time he improved upon his mix reviews from last time. While I thought he was funny last time, he was certainly funnier this year. His best joke of the night came after Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová won best song. Glen had just finished a very heartfelt and humble speech when Jon made the comment, “Wow, that guy is so arrogant”.
Overall I thought the 80th Academy Awards were entertaining, Jon Stewart was great and there were some good montages showing some of the more memorable moments from the past 79 years.
Paramount and Universal move to Blu ray Cody Ballack
It comes with no surprise that Universal Studios and Paramount are now backing the only hi definition disc on the market. Now with HD DVD production halted Blu ray has the support of nearly all major studios and we can look forward to owning all our favorite movies for the same format.
The end for HD DVD February 19, 2008 Cody Ballack
Today Toshiba Corporation officially announced the demise of HD DVD. The company does however plan to fully support their products and after sales service plans for those of us who already own a Toshiba HD DVD product. You can look at this several ways, negatively: without competition Sony’s Blu ray costs may yet go up. On the positive side everyone waiting on the fence for a winner can now step into the world of high definition. I for one am going to miss HD DVD, RIP 2006-2008.
Welcome to Armchair Critics February 15, 2008 The Armchair Critics team
Your new #1 Source for HD DVD, Blu ray and DVD reviews. Armchair Critics offers a fresh take on reviewing movies. Each review has an author, breaking down the movie itself, video, audio, extras, and an overall rating. The overall rating is not an average but an overall score showcasing the discs buyability. Whether we like the movie or not, the overall score will reflect the discs appeal to those interested, and to further reach everyone all of our critics, referred to as The Council give an overall rating for each movie whether or not they were the author of the review, this way you can see which critic best relates to you’re individual taste in movies. Keep in mind we rate the movie for what it is, based upon its genre, so if a comedy gets a 5 out of 5 its because its funny, probably not because its a masterpiece.
In the near future keep an eye out for the Armchair forum where you can engage in conversation with the critics and fellow moviegoers. As well we will be adding news sections, and blogs, keep checking back to see whats new on Armchair Critics.
